Kenya: The Cabinet has approved the Cooperatives Bill

05 Oct 2023

The Cabinet in Nairobi has approved the Cooperatives Bill, 2023, reintroducing the role of the Commissioner of Cooperatives and enacting other reforms in public administration. This legislative proposal is aligned with the National Co-operative Policy (Sessional Paper No. 4 of 2020) titled 'Promoting Cooperatives for Socio-Economic Transformation' and is intended to bolster the co-operative sector's contribution to national development.

The proposed law aims to enhance the governance framework for cooperatives, offering improved supervision and regulation to safeguard the funds of cooperative members. This institutional strengthening is expected to particularly benefit smallholder agriculture, a cornerstone of numerous Kenyan households. It will facilitate the aggregation of agricultural produce, including staple crops and emerging sectors like fisheries, aquaculture, etc.
